Top Fashion Trends in 2013 by Chichi Maduka

As the year 2013 gradually comes to an end, let me highlight some interesting fashion trends which ‘wowed’ us all this year. From the runways to the red carpets, to the streets, we spotted them as they marked this year with big fashion moments.

This year, colours were predominant in the wardrobe choices of most fashion lovers. Yellow orange, pink colours and other bright interesting colours were confidently worn by fashionistas (women and men) like never before. Who would have thought that wearing a colour like orange could be so cool? Or that orange would become the new black for many? With the ‘colour-block’ trend which spilled from late 2012 into 2013, bright colours were paired with each other to get a whole new dimension of style. The colour-block trend got so huge that everyone caught the bug, men included! It became a sort of fashion fun!

Later in 2013,  the colours became subtle when the pastel trend set in. The lighter shades of blue, yellow, pink, orange, green, etc became the in-thing and were worn as single colours or combined (colour-blocked) with other colour(s) of dresses and/or accessories.

Prints in their various forms- Ankara prints, floral prints, animal prints and 3-D prints were not left out of the fashion scene this year. Prints always find their way into every fashion season. They are constantly in fashion. A right print with the right accessory is always alluring.

Lace made a huge come-back this year with various types of lace crafted into fabulous styles which walked the red carpets. We saw many designed in see-through patterns for sexier looks.

Lastly, we had(and still have) the boyfriend outfits which in definition are clothes designed for women with attributes borrowed from men’s fashion. The boyfriend jeans, blazers, even shoes and bags are currently trending and the bold fashionistas are rocking it. With the right styling and nice stilettos, the boyfriend look leaves the wearer with a totally different and unique look while still maintaining her feminity.

The year 2013 is definitely one of the most memorable years in fashion history for designers and fashion lovers as it was characterized by so many trends and runway statements. We wonder what 2014 will be like.
