Top Fashion Trends in 2013 by Chichi Maduka

image02
As the year 2013 gradually comes to an end, let me highlight some interesting fashion trends which ‘wowed’ us all this year. From the runways to the red carpets, to the streets, we spotted them as they marked this year with big fashion moments.

This year, colours were predominant in the wardrobe choices of most fashion lovers. Yellow orange, pink colours and other bright interesting colours were confidently worn by fashionistas (women and men) like never before. Who would have thought that wearing a colour like orange could be so cool? Or that orange would become the new black for many? With the ‘colour-block’ trend which spilled from late 2012 into 2013, bright colours were paired with each other to get a whole new dimension of style. The colour-block trend got so huge that everyone caught the bug, men included! It became a sort of fashion fun!

Later in 2013,  the colours became subtle when the pastel trend set in. The lighter shades of blue, yellow, pink, orange, green, etc became the in-thing and were worn as single colours or combined (colour-blocked) with other colour(s) of dresses and/or accessories.

Prints in their various forms- Ankara prints, floral prints, animal prints and 3-D prints were not left out of the fashion scene this year. Prints always find their way into every fashion season. They are constantly in fashion. A right print with the right accessory is always alluring.

Lace made a huge come-back this year with various types of lace crafted into fabulous styles which walked the red carpets. We saw many designed in see-through patterns for sexier looks.

Lastly, we had(and still have) the boyfriend outfits which in definition are clothes designed for women with attributes borrowed from men’s fashion. The boyfriend jeans, blazers, even shoes and bags are currently trending and the bold fashionistas are rocking it. With the right styling and nice stilettos, the boyfriend look leaves the wearer with a totally different and unique look while still maintaining her feminity.

The year 2013 is definitely one of the most memorable years in fashion history for designers and fashion lovers as it was characterized by so many trends and runway statements. We wonder what 2014 will be like.

Fashion on Sundays by Chichi Maduka

Most churches in Nigeria have various dress codes for their members. Some churches have nothing against ladies not wearing scarves, while some denominations make it compulsory.Jewelries and body ornaments are issues in some denominations, while others don’t seem to mind. These rules are majorly based on the churches’ doctrines and beliefs. However, there are general fashion rules pertaining to dressing for service. Yes, there are!
In fashion, there are rules, principles, and guidelines on what to wear, how to wear, where to wear, and who wears. In a way, some of these apply to ‘church fashion’
Most times, one observes people in the church on Sundays wearing sleeveless dresses with strap hands, skimpy outfits which expose the thighs, dresses with plunging necklines and those that expose the busts. Also, open-back/backless dresses, dresses bearing the mid-riff, monostripes and other outfits which exposes the body more than usual. These outfits draw unnecessary attention  and distract people from paying attention to the preacher. These fashion flops (my opinion, folks!) are common in many churches.. Popular musician, Britney Spears was recently spotted overtly wearing a very skimpy outfit to church and I still wonder what in the world she was thinking!

I am of the opinion that to visit the house of God, one may dress gorgeously but sensibly. Do not disrespect God by wearing provocative outfits to church on Sundays. You equally attract and ‘command’ respect for yourself when you dress properly. Do have yourselves a happy, fashionable Sunday everyone and be inspired by these pictures chosen here for your Sunday delight!

Dressed in Tissue Paper by Chichi Maduka

Recently, fashion has evolved from using fabrics into using papers to design wearable dresses. Art papers, construction papers, tissue papers and other types of papers are now used to design dresses and accessories that have everything a woman looks for: style, elegance, and a little charm.
Tissue paper dresses which are hand-sewn and glued into place (according to a designer who makes use of tissue papers in designing some of her collections), do not fray and are quite durable but not being able to wash them is a draw-back.
image03image02image01
The tissue paper used is usually in massive sheets, about 70 inches wide and rolled up like a bolt of fabric. In order to make it more durable and give more structure to the material, fusible interface (or adhesive fabrics) is ironed onto the tissue paper(s). This process takes one to two days to complete before the actual sewing/gluing of the materials.
 image04image06image08
With a few dozen rolls of toilet paper, the end result is architectural, couture tissue paper dresses that are cheaper than designer dresses made out of fabrics. Although, toilet paper may not become the next big thing in the fashion world, dresses made out of it will definitely provide the fashion forward wearer with a sense of individuality and style.

Doing the Ripped-Jeans Trend by Chichi Maduka

1 3 2
Distressed, destroyed, deconstructed, torn or ripped jeans are some of the names used to refer to a denim outfit that has holes made on it, usually around the knees. It is a wardrobe choice for individuals who seek an edgy, street style look. As every woman and man owns a pair of jeans, a pair of ripped jeans adds variety to your everyday jeans; variety is added to spice up your closet of jeans. While some ripped jeans are bought already slashed, you can create your own rips on a normal pair of jeans. For how to, you can visit this site: www.jennblogsat.wordpress.com/2011/08/18/doin-it-yourself-ripped-jeans-the-right-way/.
Torn-up jeans are inappropriate for some occasions such as business meetings, as office wears, job interviews, and other formal engagements but are OK for informal and semi-formal occasions that require casual, street style or edgy rockabilly look.

Before wearing a pair of ripped jeans, you should take into consideration the image you are trying to create with it. If you are not comfortable with it, don’t go for it. If you are not ready for full-on deconstructed jeans, go for a pair with just few slashes that do not expose much skin or the one with slashes that do not expose the skin at all. You can pair them with more structured pieces like the stilettos, blazers, shirts for a toned-down and more refined look. A good example of this is seen below on Kim Kardashian, Khloe Kardashian and Scott Disick.
6 7 8
For a rebellious, rocker-chic look to channel your inner rock star, ripped jeans are usually paired with equally distressed pieces. The entertainer, Russel Brand (pictured below) perfectly pulls off this look at all times which matches his image.
9 10 11
Whether you prefer slightly-ripped jeans, boldly-slashed jeans or the ones slashed all the way down the ankle, a refined street style or an edgy rockabilly look, always match your ripped-jean outfit with your image. I also recommend that you appear totally clean from your hair to your shoes. For instance, you do not want to wear ripped jeans with messed-up hair, else you will appear grungy and be mistaken for an insane person.
